Vintage Pair of Castle on the Lake Bowls by Johnson Bros
1940s-1950s; Johnson Bros - Hanley, England Pair of English transferware bowls in the "Castle on the Lake" pattern by Johnson Bros, featuring a pastoral riverside scene with a golden-domed castle, flowering trees, and cypress in the foreground. The design is executed in brown transfer with hand-tinted green, blue, and ochre accents under a clear glaze. Both bowls have scalloped rims with rope-molded edges typical of mid-century Johnson Bros production. Marked on reverse with the pattern name, registration number 118580, and Permanent & Acid Resisting Colors. Founded in 1883 in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Johnson Bros became one of England's most prolific producers of durable earthenware dinner services, known for their fine transferware patterns and export popularity throughout the 20th century. Light crazing and minor utensil wear consistent with age; no chips or cracks observed.
