The rim edge is beaded in dark cobalt Flow blue. The floral pattern on the main side flows down from right under the rim to near to the base.
The base has the Johnson Bros. Back stamp mark used starting in 1913. Flow blue earthenware and porcelain were made mostly for the American market. Flow blue porcelain for some reason was never popular with the British consumer.The American market really favored Flow Blue porcelain and still does. For those who are wondering how we get Flow Blue, it is important to note that flow blue is started like any other Transferware. The transferware design is on a copper plate first. Then the blue Pigment is transferred by paper to the porcelain plate.
Then the paper is burned off or soaked off and leaves your transferware pattern on the porcelain piece. The main difference in Flow Blue is The Ink and ceramic blanks were deliberately designed to allow the ink to Flow and spread into the Blank. The ink spreading creates the Typical Blurred and distorted flow blue look. This measures 8" Long rim to handle x 3 3/4" Wide to the widest part x 4 1/2 High to the top of the handle.
